What Is Personal Tax & Self Assessment?

Personal tax covers the income tax you owe as an individual, reported to HMRC through the Self Assessment system. If you have income that isn’t taxed automatically through PAYE — from self-employment, property, dividends, or other sources — you’ll usually need to file a Self Assessment tax return each year.

The system can be confusing, the rules change often, and the penalties for getting it wrong add up fast. That’s where we come in. We handle the whole process, claim every relief you’re entitled to, and make sure you only ever pay what you actually owe.

The Key Deadline

Your online Self Assessment tax return and any tax you owe must reach HMRC by midnight on 31 January each year. Miss it and you face an automatic £100 penalty — even if you owe no tax — with interest building daily on anything unpaid. We make sure you’re filed and sorted in good time.

Personal Tax for Individuals

Whether you’ve got a side income, dividends, capital gains, or simply need a hand with your return, we make personal tax painless. We handle:

  • Self Assessment tax returns prepared accurately and filed on time
  • Allowances and reliefs claimed in full so you don’t overpay
  • Capital gains tax on property and investment disposals
  • High Income Child Benefit Charge and other tricky areas
  • Clear advice in plain English, whenever you need it

Personal Tax for Landlords

Property income comes with its own rules — and a few traps. We help landlords stay compliant and tax-efficient, whether you own one buy-to-let or a growing portfolio. We cover:

  • Rental income and expenses reported correctly
  • Mortgage interest relief applied under the current rules
  • Allowable costs maximised to reduce your bill
  • Capital gains tax planning when you sell
  • Making Tax Digital readiness for landlords ahead of the changes

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

From 6 April 2026, landlords and sole traders with qualifying income over £50,000 must keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. The threshold drops to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. We’ll get you set up with the right cloud software early, so the transition is seamless.

Personal Tax for Content Creators

Earning money from YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, Instagram, sponsorships, or affiliate deals? That income is taxable — and HMRC expects you to declare it. The world of creator income is new territory for a lot of accountants, but it’s one we genuinely understand.

We help content creators with:

  • Declaring income from platforms, sponsorships, ad revenue, and brand deals
  • Claiming expenses properly — equipment, software, home studio, travel, and more
  • Sole trader vs limited company advice as your income grows
  • Gifted products and payments in kind, which often count as taxable income
  • Staying compliant while keeping as much of your earnings as possible

If your channel or platform has turned into real income, we’ll make sure your tax is handled properly — without killing the creative side of what you do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to file a Self Assessment tax return?

Generally, yes if you’re self-employed, a landlord, earn income from content creation, receive significant dividends or savings income, or have capital gains to report. Not sure? Get in touch and we’ll tell you straight away.

When is the Self Assessment deadline?

Online returns and payment are due by midnight on 31 January each year. Late filing brings an automatic £100 penalty, even if no tax is due, plus daily interest on unpaid tax.

I’m a content creator — is my income really taxable?

Yes. Income from ad revenue, sponsorships, affiliate links, subscriptions, and even gifted products can all be taxable. We’ll help you declare it correctly and claim the expenses you’re entitled to.

Can you help if I’m behind on previous returns?

Absolutely. We regularly help people get back on track with HMRC and minimise penalties. The sooner you reach out, the better.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the complexity of your tax affairs. Contact us for a clear, fixed-fee quote with no hidden extras.
